Blank screen with Windows 8.1

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText version 10.1
  • Windows 8.1

 This issue has been fixed in ZoomText version 10.1.4.xx and higher

PROBLEM

After updating Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 with ZoomText 10.1 installed, the user's display will be black and unusable.

CAUSE

Under investigation.

SOLUTION

To fix the problem, you will need to uninstall ZoomText 10.1 using the following steps. Once ZoomText is uninstalled, you will have to downgrade your system back to Windows 8 (which requires a system reformat) or wait for the next update of ZoomText 10.1.

How to uninstall ZoomText 10.1 without a display:

  1. Press the Windows Key to go to the Start Screen – If ZoomText 10.1 is running with speech turned on, you should hear the first tile echoed. "Mail" is the default tile.
  2. Type "control".
  3. Press the Enter key; ZoomText 10.1 will echo "Control Panel".
  4. Type "uninstall".
  5. Press the Tab key twice; ZoomText 10.1 will echo "Uninstall a program".
  6. Press the Enter key.
  7. Press the "Z" key; ZoomText 10.1 will echo "ZoomText 10.1".
  8. Press the Enter key.
  9. Wait for 2-5 minutes; ZoomText 10.1 is uninstalling.
  10. Press and hold the “ALT” key and press “Y” for Yes.
  11. Wait 15-30 seconds.
  12. Press and hold the “ALT” key and press “Y” for Yes.
  13. The system will reboot after a few minutes.

At this point, you can reformat your system to revert back to Windows 8, or wait for the next ZoomText update, which will provide support for Windows 8.1.
