System hangs when starting ZoomText

The information in this article applies to:

  • ZoomText 10.0, 10.1, 9.0, 8.xx and 7.xx

PROBLEM

When attempting to start ZoomText the system hangs.

CAUSE

This problem is often due to conflicts with utilities that are running on your system, such as anti-virus and firewall programs. This problem can also be caused by spyware programs.

SOLUTION

In most cases, these utilities and malicious programs are launched automatically when Windows starts up. To identify such a culprit, use the follow procedure.

  1. Click on the Windows Start button and select Run...
  2. In the Open: combo box, type: msconfig, then click the OK button.

This will bring you to the System Configuration Utility in the General tab.

  3. Choose the Selective Startup radio button.
  4. Uncheck Load Startup Items.
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Click the Restart button.
  7. When the computer restarts a message box will appear stating that you have used the System Configuration Utility. Check the box labeled Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration utility when Windows start.
  8. Click the OK button.
  9. Try starting ZoomText.

If Selective Startup resolves the problem, using a process of elimination is the only way to determine which program is causing the problem. You can do this as follows:

  1. Click on the Windows Start button and select Run...
  2. In the Open: combo box, type: msconfig, then click the OK button.

This will bring you to the System Configuration Utility in the General tab.

  3. Click on the Startup tab.
  4. Check the first few items in the list.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Click Close.
  7. Click the Restart button.
  8. After the system has restarted, try starting ZoomText again.
  • If the system hang does not occur, repeat steps 1 through 8. In step 4 check the next few items in the list.
  • If the system hang does occur, one of the items selected in the previous pass through step 4 is the culprit. In this case, repeat 1 through 8 and in step 4 uncheck one of the items selected in the last pass. Repeat this process until ZoomText starts without the system hanging.
  1. Once you've identified the culprit, repeat steps 1 through 7 and in step 4 recheck all items except the culprit. We recommend that you uninstall the culprit if you are no longer using.
